Le Chat

“On lui dit: prends les souris et laisse les oiseaux!
C’est bien subtil, et le chat le plus fin quelquefois se trompe.”

I found the above in a French book I have forgotten and no longer have. I wrote it down and kept it – it touches on both my sense of humour and my awareness of the tragic side of nature, ‘red in tooth and claw ’. I think it means something like:

The Cat

“We say to it: catch the mice and leave the birds alone!
It is really subtle and even the smartest cat sometimes gets it wrong.”

L’amour d’une Mère
‘The Love of a Mother’, is a short and, for me at least, a surprising poem by the novelist, Victor Hugo, in which the love of a mother for her children seems to be compared with God’s love for those who receive Holy Communion at Mass.
I found it on a memorial card in a friend’s old flat in Spain and wrote it down on an envelope while tea was being prepared...
