Gile Mo Chroí – The Light of My Heart

Is é gile mo chroí do chroí-se, a Shlánaitheoir,

Is is ciste mo chroí do chroí-se a fháil im chomhair;

Ó is follus gur líon do chroí le mo ghrása, a st7oacute;ir,

I gcochall mo chroí do chroí-se fág i gcomhad.

The light of my heart is your heart, my Saviour,

And the treasure of my heart is to have your heart before me;

As it is clear that your heart has filled with love for me, my beloved,

In the hollow of my heart leave your heart in store.

This is the first verse of a penitential poem by Limerick‑born Tadhg Gaelach Ó Súilleabháin (1715 – 1795).

It was set to music by the remarkable composer, Seán Ó Riada (1931 – 1971), as a Communion hymn for his famed Mass in Irish.

The translation is my own.
